The Uthingo Foundation – Pilot Project
“It all started in the suburbs of London, with a little idea between a Doctor, Deschu and a Conservationist, Lorna, both with experience on the ground with African wildlife and communities. We wanted to make a difference somewhere, and we knew the people that could help us along the way.
Marumo, a Zulu lady born and bred, had an idea for a charity that she wanted to start, to make a difference in the communities she was brought up in and now works so closely to. She wanted to bring the wildlife and the communities together and connect them. Zama, a Wild Dog Researcher shared this dream, and wanted to increase the involvement the communities have in conservation within game reserve in South Africa.
Along with TK, the man on the ground working directly with the communities, he knows them better than anyone, and has built many strong relationships. He shared the same vision, increasing positive attitudes and promoting this coexistence.
And then comes Cathy, with a background in Conservation education, we knew she would be the lady to drive our project further and increase our impact on the next generation, inspiring them and creating those positive attitudes towards wildlife at a young age.
We presented our ideas to Project Rhino managers, and to our disbelief they shared the exact same vision as we do. Expanding their Rhino Art programme and increasing their impact in local communities to achieve connectivity and reduce wildlife conflicts.
And there was born The Uthingo Foundation working for “People for the Environment”.

Project Rhino challenged all schools in KwaZulu Natal to assist us to try and save our rhino and stop wildlife crime in the province. Our call for action was to invite all schools in KZN to select one day in September (#worldrhinomonth) to have a “Civvies Day for Rhino” where all learners pay R10 to wear civvies to school and in this way assist Project Rhino to raise funds for all our projects to attempt to save our rhino. It is so important for the youth of our country to show that they support conserving our wildlife and protecting our natural heritage.  This will be an annual initiative to try involve our youth in conserving our wildlife.

Rhino Peak Challenge: On #WorldRhinoDay, the 22nd of September 2018, a small group of South Africa’s finest Trail Runners were asked to ascend the iconic Rhino Peak in the Southern Region of the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site. The main focus was to raise awareness, in a unique way, to the plight of Rhinos as well as the other endangered habitant of the Rhino Peak itself, the Bearded Vulture. These two very different creatures are a powerful symbol for South Africa’s threatened species and having these elite runners doing something special on the only Peak over 3000m in the world that resembles a Rhino sent an unprecedented message on behalf of the conservation

This year Project Rhino supported Nkosinathi Ntoyi, the Operations and Co-ordinations Manager for Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, to participate in the Rhino Peak Challenge to raise awareness and funds for saving our rhino and bearded vultures.

SAVING THE RHINOS… When we took to the savannas of South Africa and experienced the beauty there, we knew we had create a collection in it’s honor and give back in a bigger way. We were not only inspired by the rich landscapes, but by the life there–particularly the life of the rhinos. Because of our love and concern for these majestic creatures, we are donating $10 of every full price bikini purchase* to Project Rhino, a non-profit that works to protect rhino habitats from poachers and keep the animals safe and happy. Once again, merbabes and gentle giants living happily ever after.
