COVID-19 has brought tourism revenues across Africa to a halt, leaving a huge deficit in conservation funding. Last year, more than 100 ranger teams – including the Project Rhino K9-Unit – competed in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge (WRC), raising critical funding to support Africa’s rangers in their hour of need.
A year further on, the effects of Covid-19 are perhaps more acute than ever – many of our ranger teams have lost friends, family and colleagues, while the conservation sector faces daily struggles to raise the funding required to continue their important work.
From 27 July, the K9-Unit will once again join the Wildlife Challenge – participating in a number of physical and mental challenges, building up to the grand event on 18 September – a 21km run, in full gear, carrying a 22 kg backpack. The event will raise urgently needed funding for Project Rhino and other ranger teams working across Africa.
